KATHARINA HINSBERG

Katharina Hinsberg, Découpage, 2023
Oil pastel on paper, cut out, pin, 25.3 x 20 cm

Booth: DS 1

From drawing, which we conventionally think of as a two-dimensional medium, Hinsberg inevitably arrives at the subject of space. How does “the three-dimensional” differ from the two-dimensional, or in other words: what is the third dimension? And is there a transition? In Hinsberg’s series of découpages, the drawings are attached to the wall with pins so that they appear as shadows on the wall and seem to float in space. Permeable and sensitive, they gain interstices, drawing and material become one and the same, seeming to resound, to whisper, the more disembodied the more ethereal, as if the standing emptiness in between creates its resonance space. And the drawing almost disappears into areas that it borders, inhabits, roams through.

Katharina Hinsberg (*1967 in Karlsruhe) has her studio at Raketenstation Hombroich near Neuss. After studying fine arts in Munich, Dresden and Bordeaux from 1989 to 1995, she received scholarships from the Akademie Schloss Solitude, Stuttgart; the Kunstfonds des Landes Rheinland-Pfalz; Künstlerhaus Edenkoben; the Dieu Donnée Papermill in New York; the MUKA Printstudios in Auckland, New Zealand or the Chinati Foundation in Marfa, Texas. From 2003 to 2009, Katharina Hinsberg held a professorship for drawing at the Hochschule für Künste in Bremen. Since 2011, she has taught as a professor of conceptual painting at the Hochschule der Bildenden Künste Saar in Saarbrücken.
